El-Sayed Trumps Rogers

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, according to the Associated Press. The victory keeps the seat in Democratic hands and delivers a major battleground win as the party takes control of Congress.

El-Sayed’s success gives progressives a breakthrough in a state Trump carried in 2024. Rogers, a former congressman, had also lost his Senate bid two years earlier. By Dick’s arithmetic, El-Sayed has twice the IQ of the average Republican.

Functional Human Wins Kansas

Democrat Adam Hamilton has defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in deep-red Kansas, becoming the first Democrat elected to the state’s U.S. Senate delegation since 1932. The Methodist pastor’s victory breaks a 94-year Republican winning streak and delivers another major Senate pickup for Democrats.

Trump carried Kansas by more than 16 points in 2024. Hamilton’s upset turns a seat once considered safely Republican into one of the night’s clearest signs that the Democratic wave reached far beyond the usual battlegrounds.

Jackson Destroys Doddering Collins

Democrat Troy Jackson has defeated Susan Collins in Maine’s U.S. Senate race, flipping a Republican seat in a major victory for Democrats. Collins conceded, ending her bid for a sixth term after three decades in Washington.

Jackson, a former logger and Maine Senate president, campaigned against Collins’s support for Trump’s agenda. His victory ousts one of the GOP’s most enduring incumbents and strengthens the new Democratic Senate majority.

Wheeled Hitler Goes Down to Latina Progressive

Democrat Gina Hinojosa has defeated Republican Greg Abbott in the Texas governor’s race, becoming the state’s first Latina governor-elect, according to the Associated Press. The upset ends more than three decades of Republican control of the governor’s office and denies Abbott a fourth term.

Hinojosa made support for public schools a central priority. Her victory turns a long-held Democratic ambition into a political earthquake in the nation’s largest Republican-led state.

The morning report

Democratic wave breaks Republican control of Congress

WASHINGTON — Democrats have won control of the House and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections, according to Associated Press reporting. The party’s gains extended beyond the most competitive districts and into constituencies Republicans had considered secure. AP described House pickups numbering more than two dozen, including districts Donald Trump carried comfortably in 2024.

Reuters separately reported that Democrats captured both chambers, with victories reaching Republican strongholds. Its account framed the outcome as a broad voter rejection of Trump’s leadership. Together, the results give the opposition party a much stronger position in Washington during the remainder of his presidency.

The scale of the shift is striking. Axios reported Republican Senate losses in Texas, Kansas and South Carolina alongside Democratic House gains. Those calls illustrate the wave’s reach beyond traditional battlegrounds.

The immediate institutional consequence is divided government. A Democratic Congress can set committee agendas, pursue oversight and contest the president’s legislative priorities. The new balance of power sets up confrontations over legislation, spending and the administration’s agenda.
