Well, pull up a stool and move the empty Michelob bottles: late Saturday’s federal-government special was a three-course meal of election meddling, shaky data, and immigration policy that appears to have been planned on the back of a damp roast-beef wrapper.
Alaska tells DOJ: absolutely not, pal
Alaska’s Republican-led state government asked a federal judge to throw out a Trump-directed Justice Department lawsuit seeking to halt certification of a possible Democratic win in the state’s closely watched U.S. Senate race. State lawyers called the demand meritless and said federal interference with ballot counting and certification was unwarranted. That is the state government saying, in legal prose, “you don’t get to grab the steering wheel because you dislike where the car is going.” Associated Press reporting
California’s alleged noncitizen-voter list has a little problem: the voters
An analysis filed in federal court found that more than 40% of names on a Justice Department list of alleged noncitizen voters could not be found on California’s voter rolls. The filing says the list’s missing voter-identification numbers also made it harder for election officials to tell whether names were duplicates or belonged to people already removed from the rolls. Nothing says “election integrity” quite like handing the clerks a mystery bag and demanding they sort it before last call. Associated Press reporting
Afghan deportations through Pakistan are reportedly planned
According to sealed court documents obtained by the Associated Press, the United States intends to begin deporting Afghan immigrants from Louisiana to Pakistan as early as Monday, with onward removal to Afghanistan contemplated through Pakistan. The documents put a very real human consequence behind the administration’s enforcement machinery—one that does not get less grim because somebody in Washington has found a new bureaucratic route around the map.
