So here’s tonight’s special from the federal-government fryer: the Justice Department told Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson that she is under investigation while the department sues Utah for refusing to hand over the state’s full, unredacted voter database. Henderson says the requested material includes voters’ birthdates, partial Social Security numbers, and driver-license numbers. Terrific. Because when you want public confidence in elections, naturally you start by treating the voter file like it’s a basket of onion rings somebody left unattended at the bar. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the letter and lawsuit on September 9.
The DOJ says the states it is suing have failed to provide statewide voter-registration lists required by federal law. Utah disputes that premise, arguing the demand lacks a federal legal basis and conflicts with state privacy protections. The Tribune reported that Utah is among 30 states sued over voter-roll disclosures, and that no district or appellate court had yet ruled for DOJ in those cases. The pressure lands less than two months before the November 3, 2026 midterms, while Utah officials are also fighting the administration’s mail-ballot restrictions. Henderson told the Tribune that election officials need room to administer the election rather than fend off lawsuits, investigations, and federal demands for sensitive data.
