Republicans are putting crime back at the center of their midterm pitch, according to Associated Press reporting. Fair enough: public safety matters. But Democrats are answering that the White House’s hard-line immigration enforcement has handed them a mighty awkward counterargument.
That is the political bind here. You cannot spend months selling law-and-order as a universal solvent, then act stunned when voters ask whether the rules also apply to federal power, due process, and the people caught in the enforcement dragnet. That is not some Cambridge seminar question; it is the obvious follow-up, even after two Michelobs and a proper Italian sub.
AP reports that Democrats are explicitly tying the GOP’s crime message to concerns about the administration’s immigration actions and alleged self-dealing. So the campaign-season move is clear: run hard on fear, keep the accountability tab folded under the bar coaster, and hope nobody asks for the itemized receipt.
