WASHINGTON’S NIGHT SHIFT: Two Associated Press reports published Wednesday document a familiar governing arrangement: public power grows more coercive while access to presidential power acquires a price tag.
ICE eyes electric-shock gloves
ICE plans to spend up to $20 million on gloves designed to deliver painful electric shocks directly through contact with a person’s skin. The agency’s procurement notice describes the devices as “conductive distraction and de-escalation” tools; their practical purpose is pain compliance. The manufacturer warns against using them for punishment, verbal defiance, torture, or on people including children, pregnant women, older adults, and disabled people.
That caution is not a reassurance. It is an unusually concise list of ways a rapidly expanded immigration-enforcement force could do lasting damage when equipped with a weapon meant to leave little visible evidence. Civil immigration enforcement already depends on enormous discretion exercised in hurried encounters. Adding an on-hand shock device makes the boundary between arrest and punishment still easier to erase. A government that normalizes force first and accountability later does not merely change tactics; it trains the public to accept fewer rights in practice.
Truth Social sells the head start
Separately, the Freedom of the Press Foundation and The Intercept sued President Trump, Trump Media, and White House officials over Truth Social’s paid early-access service. The suit alleges that Wall Street firms can pay as much as $100,000 a month to receive presidential posts about matters such as tariffs and war milliseconds before the broader public, enabling customers to trade on market-moving information. The complaint also challenges the arrangement under which Truth Social receives an exclusive six-hour window for Trump’s posts before they appear elsewhere.
The allegations have not been adjudicated, and Trump Media calls the case an effort to censor the president. But the democratic problem is plain enough to describe without resolving the lawsuit: official information is most legitimate when it is public on equal terms, not when the president’s private company can package temporal advantage for sophisticated traders. The White House is not supposed to function as a premium-feed content studio with national-security push notifications.
And yes, the comparison Republicans demanded for years is unavoidable. Hunter Biden’s business relationships were treated as grounds for years of congressional scrutiny and public alarm. Here, the president’s own company is accused of selling preferred access to the president’s policy announcements. Apparently, family-linked commercial access to power is intolerable only when the family surname is inconvenient.
Together, these developments show two routes by which democratic erosion becomes routine: physical coercion directed downward at people with the least power, and commercialized access flowing upward to those with the most. Courts, reporters, civil-rights groups, and ordinary voters can still contest both. But a republic cannot outsource equal citizenship to a procurement office and a subscription tier.
