First up: ICE shot a man during an arrest in New York while his 5-year-old son was in the car. Federal officials said the driver, identified by authorities with differing spellings of his surname, rammed government vehicles and that agents feared for their lives. But video released by New York police does not settle whether the shooting was justified; ICE said its own body-camera footage would be released, though it did not say when. The man’s lawyers said he was jailed with a bullet still in his body, and the Bronx district attorney opened an investigation. That is not a clean fact pattern; that is a bar tab somebody spilled Michelob on and called a policy memo. AP reporting
Meanwhile, the White House is building a special committee to investigate Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. President Trump’s October 7 memorandum directs the committee to examine mortgage-related allegations and hold a closed November 5 hearing, with a transcript to be released afterward. Cook denies wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged. AP reported that this is the first time in the Federal Reserve’s 113-year history that a president has sought to remove a Fed governor. Nothing says steady, independent central banking quite like treating the boardroom as the Winchester McDonald’s drive-thru: apparently real to one guy, alarming to everybody else. And DOJ said it will stop enforcing federal registration requirements for silencers, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and certain other firearms nationwide. The move followed an August ruling by a federal judge in Texas. AP reported that buyers still must complete the standard firearms form and pass a background check, while machine guns and destructive devices remain subject to registration; state laws may still impose requirements. The administration said it wanted to avoid a patchwork. Sure. Nothing says orderly governance like replacing one legal framework with “good luck, pal” and an onion-ring basket. AP reporting
